The Founder Series, Part 1

Why Transforming Generations Is Paramount for Women's Health

Welcome to week number one of the Founder's Series, a collection of newsletters explaining why I emphasize the three main areas of fulfilling God's authentic purpose for our lives: health, technology, and Biblical life principles.

This week is health - women's health in particular. I recently read a book that completely transformed how I think about my own health. I will be honest and say that this is information I never knew to consider before now.

In the Flo by Alisa Vitti is a groundbreaking guide that unveils the profound impact of hormonal cycles on women's lives. Vitti introduces the concept of "Cycle Syncing," a method that aligns diet, exercise, and lifestyle with the four phases of the menstrual cycle. By understanding and working with hormonal fluctuations, women can optimize energy levels, mood, productivity, and overall well-being.

By empowering women to harness the power of their hormones, "In the Flo" has the potential to revolutionize women's health. This knowledge can lead to a new generation of women who experience fewer hormonal imbalances, improved mental health, and greater overall fulfillment. Ultimately, by understanding and respecting their bodies' natural rhythms, women can unlock their full potential and live more vibrant, fulfilling lives.

My Health Story, Based on the Top 10 Concepts I Learned from "In the Flo"

  1. Cycle Syncing: Aligning your lifestyle, diet, and exercise with the four phases of your menstrual cycle. - I never learned how to do this growing up. My life revolved around what my parents could afford. So looking into special lifestyle changes, diet, and exercise routines was nonexistent.

  2. The Four Phases of the Menstrual Cycle: Understanding the hormonal shifts and their impact on your body and mind. - This education was never provided to me. I used to fear my cycle because I didn't understand the four phases - Menstrual, Follicular, Ovulatory, and Luteal. If you were to ask me what those phases were back then, I would have no clue. But how a woman should treat herself is based on those four phases.

  3. Hormonal Imbalances: Recognizing common hormonal issues and their root causes. - Sometimes people have natural hormone issues. Other times they are created from the use of synthetic hormones, also called birth control. Either way, it is important to know what issues may occur. These can lead to symptoms that can reveal deeper problems with your health. I always used to wonder why some women I know would get headaches, throw up, get major cramps, or be extremely sick during their cycle. It is not normal.

  4. Nutrition for Hormonal Health: Tailoring your diet to support hormonal balance throughout the cycle. - Growing up, I always had to eat what my parents cooked. This may suffice as a child, but once you get older and start having a period, no one really educates on the diet and nutrition changes that are required for women. I praise God for the information I discovered in 2014 about my nutrition. It was the foundation I needed to learn about adjusting to the cycle syncing process.

  5. Exercise and the Menstrual Cycle: Optimizing workouts based on hormonal fluctuations. - Our bodies desire different kinds of workouts during the different phases of our cycles. You may find at one part of the month, you want to do HIIT. At another part of the month, you may want to do yoga or pilates. There's a reason for that. Sometimes as athletes this can be difficult, because you have to do the same kinds of workouts all month, especially while you are in season. That was the hardest part for me as a track and field athlete.

  6. Sleep and Hormones: Prioritizing quality sleep for hormonal regulation. - I think this was is self explanatory. The better sleep we get, the better our cycles will be. I have always been pretty good at getting enough rest, but we all have our days. Getting regular sleep always does wonders.

  7. Stress Management and Hormones: The connection between stress and hormonal imbalance. - When you have a lot of stress, it opens up your body to illness. I experienced this a lot in the past, so when I caught on to this, I did a lot of cleaning up in my personal life. It made a huge difference.

  8. The Power of Mindset: Cultivating a positive relationship with your body and cycle. - This is probably the most powerful point of it all. Sometimes mindset also has to do with general knowledge. If you don't have the proper education of women's health, you will struggle to see your cycle in a positive light. I did not know a lot about my health as a woman for years, and I struggled for it big time.

  9. Cycle Tracking: Using cycle tracking to understand your patterns and optimize your health. - When I learned how to track my entire cycle, not just my period, the game changed. To be transparent, I am currently on day 1 of my period, and because I now learned how to track my entire cycle and make health decisions based on that, I have a much better period this time around.

  10. Hormonal Health and Fertility: The impact of hormonal balance on fertility and pregnancy. - This can be a touchy subject, so as I share about this one, please know I sympathize with anyone experiencing difficulty here. One of the reasons why some women deal with infertility is because of the lack of education about women's health and our cycles. My heart goes out to anyone dealing with infertility. It is not an easy thing to experience. I want to encourage all women who are currently thinking about pregnancy to take a look at how cycle syncing can be a positive benefit in your fertility process. It could be the answer you need. While I have 2 healthy children, I also had 2 pregnancy losses. I 100% believe that if I knew what I know now about my cycle, those losses could have been a different story, because my choices during those times would have been different. Hear this: Please know it is not your fault. You can overcome this and anything else with the best education for you and your situation.

I want to close with this: Imagine if our young girls received this education early on? Talk about transforming generations! But you know what's even more powerful? When we as women learn this and teach the other young women we know. Our cycles are beautiful, they exist for a reason, and God created us to experience them for good reasons.

Why did I mention this today? Simply because when we become educated on our health as women, we do better, and we can begin to focus properly on bringing our authentic purpose to life. Not knowing information like this can leave us distracted trying to figure out everything on our own. But God wants to do some incredible things through you. And when you're able to operate on wisdom, everything changes, leading to generations transformed for His glory.
